Brooklyn Goes Veg + Papacitos

Brooklyn Goes Veg is happening this week and Papacitos is one of the restaurants participating in the event. Read the full article in the Brooklyn Paper.

"Next week is Brooklyn’s second annual vegetarian restaurant week — but even the organizer says the herbivorous event can’t blossom because diners keep getting steered towards beef, pork, poultry and other protein-packed pleasures of the flesh.

Only seven restaurateurs from Greenpoint to Park Slope concocted special vegetarian and vegan menus to lure in plant-eaters for “Brooklyn Goes Veg!” between Oct. 19 and 25."

Papacitos Now Serving Breakfast & Brunch!

Papcitos will now be serving it's delicious food BRUNCH style. Some of your past local favorites will be featured like our famous Huevos Rancheros and Pork & Eggs, and many new great dishes including lots of veggie and vegan options. Come in and get a Michelada “Beer Mary” or two this weekend!

We also will be serving Raven's Brew Coffee and Espresso Drinks.

Brunch Hours: Monday-Friday 8am-11am • Saturday & Sunday 11am - 3pm

Papacitos, located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is an outdoor restaurant serving Mexican street food. Soon it will have an indoor area, but for now it’s a simple patio area with picnic tables, a few plants, a couple of signs for Mexican beers, an eclectic mix of music blasting from a boombox and a bar. Very basic and very relaxed. More like a friend’s barbecue than a restaurant, which gives it a ton of charm.

Then there’s the food.

My girlfriend loves Mexican food and fish tacos are one of her favorite dishes. She’s had them across the country. New York, Florida, California. Though you don’t know her, trust me when I say that she knows what she’s talking about. What is she talking about? How Papacitos has the best fish tacos she’s ever eaten.

I’m no expert, but I agree. Made of tilapia, pickled cabbage, onions, cilantro and a, we believe, sour cream-based white sauce, the tacos were absolutely delicious. Warm, fresh and totally satisfying. You can order 1, 2 or 3. She got 3, I got 2. Luckily, she was nearly full after 2 and I got to eat most of her third. If my stomach was big enough, I would have eaten 9. The flavors were so distinct, clean and just damned tasty.

In addition to the tacos, we got an order of chips and salsa. The chips, which are made from scratch, were warm and delicious. As was the salsa, which was finely chopped, but still thick and hearty. So good. So, so good.

The whole experience lead my girlfriend to utter the above quote during our meal. I had no answer for her.

Walking back to our apartment afterwards, we were positively beatific. Belinda Carlisle was right, Heaven is a place on Earth. A place located conveniently in our neighborhood."

Write Up in Brooklyn Paper

"Chef Cody Utzman, formerly of Brooklyn Label, has struck out on his own with Papacito — "hot man" in English — a beer garden and taqueria serving up bare-bones snacks and big beers in a lot on Huron Street (between Manhattan Avenue and Franklin Street) in Greenpoint. On a recent walk by, the space was so crowded that we had to move on to Acapulco around the corner to quell our guacamole craving. Welcome back, Cody!"

"It has taken me two full days to recover from this weekend. Drinking, partying and other unmentionables in a four day span with some of the most beautiful weather we've seen in a good long while. It was a great weekend to be 'stuck' in the city. It was also nice that for the most part the neighborhood was quiet. The bars were full but not packed, the vibe was relaxed and all in all it was a kick-ass holiday.

We hit all the local spots and had a great time.

One of the highlights of the weekend was checking out Cody Utzman's (formerly of Brooklyn Label) new joint just for the Summer. Papacito's is his new Mexican venture on Huron right off Manhattan Ave in an outdoor space behind the laundromat. He had a Memorial Day BBQ complete with burgers, steak and rice and beans. Plus all Mexican beers which was a nice touch and Danny the bartender kicked ass. Cheap eats, outdoor space and beer. Pretty much all you need from Memorial to Labor Day."

New York, Brooklyn included, exists within a sort of Mexican food black hole. Either you have to hunt far and wide for the good stuff (like Chavella’s), be prepared to pay NYC prices for street food (like $9 carnitas tacos at Bonita) — or hold your breath until the Red Hook Ball Fields reopen (latest, most optimistic assessment: mid-June).

A few Red Hook vendors have set up shop at the Brooklyn Flea, but you can also satisfy your south of the border cravings in north Brooklyn, on a stretch of Manhattan Ave. in Greenpoint filled with Mexican and South American restaurants.

Papacito’s [NEW] (no phone, 162 Huron St. at Manhattan Ave., behind the M & W Laundromat) Cody Utzman, formerly of Brooklyn Label, opened this place — basically a concrete patio with brightly painted walls, a cinder block bar and some big picnic tables — on a dime and a summer prayer. The food is not authentic Mexican, but the guacamole is delicious, the tacos are satisfying, and one of the girls sharing our picnic table favorably compared the vegetarian burritos to the seed of God, but in less delicate terms. Oh, and the crowner (that stood in the way of noting Papacito’s hours)? You can get a 32 oz. Tecate in a bucket of ice served with a pile of lime wedges.

"Today this new place opened up just two short blocks from the studio. Best Mexican food I've had in the East. Perfectly grilled fish tacos with pickled cabbage just like off an LA taco cart. Can't wait to plow through the rest of the menu. Plus, it FEELS like the West, laid-back, the whole neighborhood hanging out together, dogs, one of the owners misted everyone in the courtyard every twenty minutes or so... heaven in Greenpoint.

It's gonna be a great summer!"
